My good friend Charlene and I. Charlene was my first language exchange partner 4 years ago when I came to Taiwan. We have stayed in touch, and visited one another in Canada and Seattle. After working as a nurse, she began living and doing research among the Mosuo minority group in China. Sidenote: The Mosuo have been a 'matriarchal society' where one lives with one's mother throughout life. Instead of living in 'nuclear' families, the Mosuo live in matriarchies, where children are raised by their mother and her brother (who are both living with their mother). The woman's sexual partner (of which she may have more than one) will help raise his sister's children living in his household, not his own biological offspring. It is very interesting to think about this type of social organization. Charlene is now pursuing her PhD in Sociology (Chinese Social Policy in agricultural reform and migrant worker rights) in Hong Kong.
Last night Jesse and my friend Charlene and I celebrated my birthday. We ate at Madame Jill's Vietnamese Restaurant (very tasty barbequed pork) and we had ordered a chocolate cake from the bakery near our apartment.
The cake came with 'age candles' ! :(
My beautiful chocolate cake!
